6 Unusual Mother’s Day Bouquets
86Flowers have become one of the most popular gifts on Mother's Day but for some people they are too cliché. Everyone wants to find a unique gift that will stand out from the rest and will be received with the enthusiasm he or she hopes for. For those who think flowers are cliché, here are six Mother’s Day bouquet ideas that are as traditional as they are unusual.
1. Candy Covered Strawberry Roses
Flowers made from candy melt dipped strawberries and put together in an elegant bouquet will always be received with surprise and love on Mother’s Day. A colorful and tasty bouquet like this can easily be made at home and won’t cost you a fortune. It can also be made by almost everyone because it is like an edible craft project.
All You Need:
Strawberries (as many as you want), bamboo skewers, 2 different colors of candy melts (the quantity will depend on the quantity of the strawberries) and a styrofoam block.
How to Make Them:
- First, wash and dry the strawberries with a paper towel, otherwise the candy melt won’t stick to them, because the water will change the emulsion.
- Insert a skewer in the stem end of each strawberry, but not all the way through – just enough to secure it.
- Put your “base color” candy in the microwave and melt it in 30 second intervals. You can choose any kind of color you want – red, orange, yellow or pink. The best is to pick your mom’s favorite.
- Dip the strawberries into the melted candy and then stick the skewers upright into the styrofoam block. Wait until the candy melt is hardened.
- Microwave the “decorating color” candy melts and put the melt in a Ziploc bag. Get your little brother’s tiny scissors, snip off one of the corners of the bag and draw an expanding spiral, starting from the top of each strawberry. Make sure you pick a candy color that goes well with the “base color”. If you made your “roses” red, decorate them with pink. If you made them yellow, decorate them with orange and so on.
How to Present Them:
One thing you can do is replace the skewers with artificial rose stems. Find a nice-looking artificial rose and pull the bloom off. Underneath there is a wire that you can put the strawberry on. Lay the strawberry roses in a pretty box with a ribbon and give it to your mom for Mother’s Day. Another option is to arrange the “roses” in a charming vase with fresh foliage or in a jumbo coffee/chocolate cup.
2. Ice Cream Sundae in a Flower Pot
Another flower arrangement that will impress mom on Mother’s Day is an interesting flower pot dessert (she can also be pissed off because it’s not really a plant and she loves plants). Similar to the first bouquet, this one will not cost you a fortune either.
All You Need:
Ceramic flowerpot (preferably without drain holes), plastic straw, mom’s favorite ice cream, frozen pound cake, Oreos and fresh cut flowers.
How to Make It:
- Slice up the pound cake and line the bottom of the pot, creating a layer that is a couple of inches thick.
- Stick the straw into the cake layer and make sure it is centered.
- Let the ice cream soften slightly and fill up the pot with it. You can even grab several different flavors and mix them up.
- Optionally, you can put fruits, chocolate chips or anything your mom likes in the ice cream.
- Snip off the straw at the ice cream level and put the pot in the freezer until it is ready to serve.
- For the final layer of your dessert, aka the “soil”, crush some Oreos. You can do this in a food processor or just use a Ziploc bag and a shoe. Other alternatives to the Oreos are brownies and chocolate cake crumbs.
- Before you give your Mother’s Day gift, put the fresh cut flowers down the straw and cover the ice cream with the crushed Oreos.
To add a nice touch to your Mother’s Day “plant”, you can personalize the pot with a special message, artwork, or even a simple monogram.
3. “Thanks a Bunch” Practical Bouquet
The “Thanks a Bunch” bucket is a very creative way to say "thank you" to a mom who loves gardening or cooking. This Mother’s Day bouquet comes in two themes – kitchen and garden. The Kitchen Bunch includes a grocery shopping tote in blue and brown, an apron and two tea towels in the same color combination, two dish cloths and a cute metal bucket. The Garden Bunch comes with a pair of garden gloves, apron, tote for storing gardening tools, bandanna and a bucket.
All the items are creatively rolled to form flower buds and are arranged in the bucket with pretty decorative flowers and leaves. This unusual and practical Mother’s Day bouquet is definitely something that your mom will remember for many more Mother's Days to come.
4. Daisy Cookie Bouquet
Cookie bouquets are very creative way to add a nice touch to mom’s special day. They are unique, surprising and a fun alternative to flowers. This delicious Daisy Cookie Bouquet is perfect for Mother’s Day because white daisies symbolize a common feeling of affection and the message they deliver is: "You have as many virtues as this plant has petals". The bouquet is made of six oversized daisy cookies, decorated with cute ladybugs and arranged in a charming picket fence planter.
5. Pink Carnation Margarita Cocktail
Carnations are considered traditional Mother's Day flowers and, pink carnations in particular, are often given as a sign of gratitude. Carnations are also one of the most inexpensive flowers you can buy, and for that reason some people look down on them (as bouquets). However, giving these wonderful flowers in a creative way, for example, as a Pink Margarita Cocktail, will gain you a lot of points on Mother’s Day. The Pink Margaritas are available online but you can also create your own cocktail. All you need is an acrylic margarita glass, pink floral foam or water-storing gel beads, carnations and a straw.
6. Red Roses Sugar Cookies
Roses are also among the most popular Mother's Day flowers because they signify appreciation, love and respect. To make mom happy on Mother's Day with something a bit different than the traditional red roses, get her beautiful rose shaped sugar cookies. These flowers will never fade or require water and will be received with a smile on the face. To make sure that your mother gets the best treats, pick cookies that do not contain corn syrups, artificial sweeteners or preservatives.
